From Dr. Pinesett:
First and foremost, I am a black first-generation physician. I am also the first person in my family to graduate from college. Throughout my educational career, my family was extremely supportive and integral to me becoming a physician, however, they had limited knowledge on the path to medicine and I had limited financial resources to make it happen. I was forced to figure out the logistics on my own. I’ve encountered many setbacks and hardships along the way, but my determination and unwillingness to break in the face of adversity has carried me through.
On my path to becoming a physician, it took a lot of extra energy to find the resources I needed and to develop the academic skills to be a competitive medical school candidate. I want to share my story, the lessons I’ve learned, and pass on the skills I’ve acquired to other diverse, underrepresented, and disadvantaged students so they can be high academic achievers. I believe my mentorship and tutelage are invaluable and can astronomically improve students’ medical school opportunities.
